Loma Linda University School of Allied Health Professions is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Lee Berk, DrPH, Associate Dean of Research and a beloved member of our university family. Dr. Berk dedicated decades of service to advancing health science and promoting whole-person care through research and education.

A pioneer in the study of humor, laughter, and their impact on health, Dr. Berk’s groundbreaking research gained worldwide recognition and contributed to a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection. His work highlighted how positive emotions and laughter influence stress hormones, immune function, and overall well-being.

As Associate Dean of Research, Dr. Berk played an instrumental role in fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation within the School of Allied Health Professions. He mentored countless students and faculty, inspiring them to pursue excellence and curiosity in their academic and clinical endeavors.

Dr. Craig Jackson, Dean of the School of Allied Health Professions, reflected on Dr. Berk’s impact:

“Dr. Berk was a long-time colleague of mine both in the Medical Center and here in Nichol Hall between the School of Public Health and School of Allied Health Professions; many others have similar experiences with Dr. Berk. His particular interests were always related to wellness, health, and stress management; he kept me accountable for my health and wellbeing. I know he will be missed by so many of us.”

Dr. Berk’s legacy at Loma Linda University will be remembered through his contributions to science, his passion for learning, and his unwavering commitment to improving lives through evidence-based practice.
